Fully understand this though, given your recent jet-setting. ;-) Hope you're able to resolve the upgrade problems without too much hassle. One of WP 2.7's new features is a single-click upgrade path for future upgrades, so who knows - this may be the last time any of us has to struggle with this sort of issue...
