I picked up John Doe’s record, A Year in the Wilderness, on a whim last month. After a few listens, I’ve resolved to be more whimsical. Doe, former member of 70s LA punk outfit X, belts out some pretty gritty songs, perfectly penned. I really like Golden State, available for listening below. Share your take in the comments.

Thanks for the share. Neat little throbbing guitar effect throughout, not sure if it was old-school tremolo or a studio trick. Do you listen to the All Songs Considered podcast? My taste differs significantly from the hosts at times, but it is almost always interesting.

Not sure about the guitar effect, but I like it. I do listen to All Songs Considered, and enjoy it quite a bit. If you like *any* of the music on that program, I’d strongly recommend an eMusic subscription. All independent artists, and really low price. I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. If you’re interested, let me know–I can send you an invite for 25 free songs (or 50 or something, I dunno…)

Since Sara’s taste is music is, how you say… terrible, such a subscription would be in the just-for-me category and now is not a good time for that. I really like free. Like Derek Webb’s Mockingbird or Bill Mallonee’s/Vigilantes of Love’s album Summershine – if you don’t have both, you probably should.
You know what our church picnic is missing? You and I playing guitars and singing. Actually, that’s what’s missing in general. Let’s remedy that sometime.

Summershine is downloadable for free from Bill’s web site. VOL is great. I have been listening to Blister Soul almost constantly since college (thanks to one of my freshmen roommates for introducing me to them).
