Rob was sitting down at the table with his laptop finishing up some things he couldn’t get done at the office. I came in to clear off the table from dinner and said, “I cleaned out the refrigerator today. There was a lot of gross stuff in there. I should really do that more often.”
Rob looked at me vacantly.
“You’re not listening to me. That’s OK, I’m not saying anything important.”
Then Rob said, “No, I heard exactly what you said. You cleaned out the refrigerator today and there was a lot of gross stuff in it. But what am I supposed to say? ‘Yes’ and then you’ll get mad, or ‘no’ and then there’ll be more gross stuff in the fridge.”

OK. Poor Rob. His mind really is somewhere else. Are you sure he wasn’t dreaming?

He was probably pretty zoned out. Poor guy.
Guys have to be careful how they respond to semingly inoculous comments we make. They can’t tell when they’re loaded comments. For example: “Does this outfit make me look fat”…the first thing a guy thinks is “No, your fat makes you look fat”…but he pauses and says instead “Do you think it makes you look fat?” Because if he says “No” then we either think 1. he can’t be trusted to tell the truth or 2. he’s just saying what he thinks I want to hear. If he says yes…you know the rest…
